Alex O’Loughlin is an Australian actor, who Is most notable for the portrayal of Kevin Hiatt in the drama series called, The Shield. He was born on August 24, 1976 in Canberra, Australia, and was baptized with the real name of Alexander O’Lachlan. His mother is a nurse while his father is physics and an astronomy teacher. He has a younger sister named Jacqui. At the young age of two, O’Loughlin’s parents separated and he found it hard as he is growing up and suffered from ADHD and OCD as well as in asthma. He initially wanted to become a jet fighter but his teacher told him that it is difficult for him to reach his dream as he endures asthma. In addition, in year 1999, O’Loughlin entered the National Institute of Dramatic Art, which is located in Sydney Australia, where he graduated in year 2002. O’Loughlin graduated with the Bachelor of Dramatic Art program. After graduating on the said institute, O’Loughlin eventually began his career in Australain TV as well as film productions, which also includes his roles in Black Jack: Sweet Science and Love Bytes and in the TV series of White Collar Blue.
Subsequently, O’Loughlin made his first lead role in the Australian romantic comedy-drama film entitled, Oyster Farmer, where he portrayed the role of Jack, together with Jim Norton and Diana Glenn. On the following year, O’Loughlin appeared in the film of Man-Thing a straight to video film, which was directed by Brett Leonard. In the film, he portrayed the role of Deputy Eric Fraser, alongside Matthew le Nevez and Rachel Taylor as well as Jack Thompson. On the same year, O’Loughlin appeared in the thriller of Feed, which was directed again by Brett Leonard, where he portrayed the lead role of Michael Carter. Also, in year 2005, he was included in the film of The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant, where he portrayed the role of Will, together with Romola Garai and Jack Davenport. He was also featured in the 2006 romantic comedy film entitled, The Holiday, which starred Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, and Jude Law as well as Shannyn Sossamon. On the other hand, in year 2007, O’Loughlin was included in the ensemble of the supernatural thriller teen film entitled, The Invisible, which has been directed by David S. Goyer. In the film, he portrayed the role of Marcus Bohem, together with Justin Chatwin and Margarita Levieva as well as Chris Marquette.
On the same year, O’Loughlin appeared in seven of the episodes of the TV series of FX network called, the Shield, where he portrayed the role of Kevin Hiatt, who is the show’s fictional detective. Also, in year 2007, O’Loughlin was included as the lead role in the TV series of Ron Koslow entitled, Moonlight, where he portrayed the role of Mick St. John, which he portrayed until 2008. The series also includes the stars of Sophia Myles and Jason Dohring as well as Shannyn Sossamon. On the following year, O’Loughlin portrayed the role of Russell Haden in the thriller film called, Whiteout, which was initially based on the 1998 book of Greg Rucka. The film also starred Kate Beckinsale and Gabriel Macht. Also, in eyar 2009, he appeared as Vincent Rowlings in one of the episodes of the TV series of the Criminal Minds called, the Big Wheel. On the other hand, from year 2009 until 2010, O’Loughlin portrayed the role of Dr. Andy Yablonski in the CBS TV series called, Three Rivers. He then starred together with Jennifer Lopez in the romantic comedy film called, The Back-up Plan, where he portrayed the lead role of Stan. In addition, O’Loughlin currently stars in the TV series entitled, Hawaii Five-0, where he portrays the lead role of Steve McGarett.
