Cary Elwes is an English actor, who is most notable for the portrayal of Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the film series of Saw. He was born on October 26, 1962 in Westminster, London, to Dominick Elwes and Tessa Georgina Kennedy, a portrait painter and an interior designer. He was baptized with the real name of Ivan Simon Cary Elwes and was the youngest of the three children. His two brothers are Damian Elwes, who is an artist and Cassian Elwes who is a producer and an agent. Elwes, who was raised as a Roman Catholic, entered the Harrow School in London and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He then relocated to United States in year 1981 for him to study acting at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. While he was still in New York, he tool acting at the Actors Studio and in the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute.
On the other hand, Elwes had his acting debut in year 1984, when he was included in the casts of the film of Marek Kanievska entitled, Another Country, where he portrayed the role of James Harcourt. He then appeared together with Helena Bonham Carter in the British film of Lady Lane, where he portrayed the role of Guilford Dudley. In addition, Elwes was also included in the ensemble of the film of The Princess Bride, which is initially based on the book of William Goldman. In the film, he portrayed the role of Westley. He also appeared in the 1991 comedy film of Hot Shots, together with Charlie Sheen and Valeria Golino. Moreover, in year 1993, Elwes portrayed the role of Robin Hood in the comedy film of Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
In year 1997, he appeared as Jerry in the comedy film of Liar Liar, which also includes the stars of Jim Carrey and Maura Tierney. On the same year, he appeared in the thriller film called, Kiss the Girls, where he portrayed the role of Nick Ruskin. In year 2004, Elwes also starred in the horror film of Saw. On the same year, he appeared as Sir Edgar in the romantic comedy film of Ella Enchanted, together with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy. He was also featured in the 2006 film of the Factory Girl. On the following year, he appeared together with Jane Fonda in the comedy-drama film of Georgia Rule, where he portrayed the role of Arnold. In addition, Elwes portrayed the role of Dr. Clement in the horror film entitled, Psych 9, alongside Sara Foster and Michael Biehn. He then reprised his role in the 2010 film of Saw 3D, which is said to be the seventh and the final film in the series, portraying the role of Lawrence Gordon. On the other hand, Elwes is set to appear in the upcoming film entitled, The Citizen.
