Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral service of American R&B star, Etta James with musical tributes from Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera. Best known for her show-stopping hit “At Last,” Etta James died on January 20 aged 73 after suffering from leukemia and complications from dementia.
Pop star Christina Aguilera performed her own rendition of “At Last” during the funeral service in Los Angeles, which also included a performance by Stevie Wonder. The 31-year-old singer displayed raw emotion as she performed at the blue’s legend’s memorial service January 29 at the City of Refuge Church in Gardena, just outside of Los Angeles. The Voice judge looked sensational as she belted out James, hit song wearing an all black ensemble. She looked more put together than she has in a long time, wearing a form-fitting black suit and an assortment of silver jewelry. Though she was very elegant, she may have showed a little too much cleavage for such a somber occasion. But no one seemed to complain as a legion of fans took to Twitter saying they were moved by Christina’s powerful tribute.
The three time Grammy-award winning R&B singer saw numerous ups-and-downs in her career and personal life. She had struggled with heroin addiction, obesity and a string of troubled relationships. Mrs. James was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago and had been in failing health for a number of years. She also suffered from diabetes, kidney problems and dementia and was hospitalized at the end of last year. Since the singer’s death, her album sales have sky rocketed, with fans snapping up her various records. For the week ending on January 22, James’ albums sold a total 30,000 copies, marking a 378% increase over the previous week, when she moved just over 6,000 units.
Another music icon, Stevie Wonder, performed three songs, including his single Shelter In the Rain and he delivered a harmonica solo. While the Reverend Al Sharpton, who met Etta when he was an up-and-coming preacher, delivered the heartfelt eulogy. Sharpton described Etta as a trailblazer who helped break down the ‘colour curtain in America.’ He went on to say that she used music to bridge a world that was separate referring to America’s turbulent racial divisions during the civil rights era. He said the she was able to get them on the same rhythms and humming the same ballads and understanding each others’ melodies way before they could even use the same hotels.
Sharpton also read a personal note written by President Barack Obama. As for Aguilera’e performance, it was surprising to see the star got so emotional as Etta was one of her idols. Christina took to her Twitter page two days ago to honor the legendary singer. She added an old black and white photograph of herself performing with the recently deceased songbird saying that it was one of the greatest moments of her life referring to her singing with her idol, the legendary Etta James adding that she will be forever missed.
