Born January 4, 1963 in Toronto, Canada, David Scott Foley is a Canadian comedian, writer, director and producer best known for his work in The Kids in the Hall, NewsRadio, A Bugs Life, and Celebrity Poker Showdown. He also frequently appears in The Late Late Show on CBS
He is the third children of Michael, a steamfitter and Mary, a homemaker. Foley said that his family was always very, very aware of TV particularly comedy shows. Foley watched the Dick Van Dyke Show obsessively as a child but his parents never thought he would become a comedian or actor because of his extreme shyness.
Dave Foley dropped out of an alternative high school to do stand-up comedy. He met Kevin McDonald at an improv class and, while employed as movie ushers, they began working as a comedy team. In 1984, they merged with another team to form “The Kids in the Hall”. Foley made his film debut at 22 as the lead in the Canadian film High Stakes (1986).
In October 1989, The Kids in the Hall debuted on TV, with a cast of Foley, McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Some of Foley’s famous characters include Hecubus, one of the Sizzler sisters, the A. T. & Love boss, Bruno Puntz Jones, Mr. Heavyfoot, Jocelyn, and Lex. The show ended in April 1994. After the show’s cancellation, the group stayed in contact for the 1996 feature Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy and the 2001 live tour Kids in the Hall: Same Guys New Dresses.
Relocating to Los Angeles, Foley appeared in the unfortunate movie “It’s Pat” and went to work on a new television show, starring as station manager Dave Nelson in the aptly named sitcom “NewsRadio” from 1995 to 1999. During this time, he also wrote, produced and starred in the comedy “The Wrong Guy,” which won Best Screenplay at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. Working in Hollywood, he had supporting parts in comedies “Hacks,” “Blast from the Past,” and “Dick.” Meanwhile, he provided the voice of ‘Flik the Ant’ in “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,” and “It’s Tough to be a Bug,” as well as various voices in the “South Park” movie, the IMAX movie “CyberWorld,” and the miniseries “From the Earth to the Moon.” Mixing animation with his sketch comedy background, he then starred in “Monkeybone, based in part on the graphic novel – “Dark Town.”
On-stage, he appeared in the musical comedy “White Trash Wins Lotto,” which ran at The Roxy in Hollywood. He also had supporting parts in the comedy features “On the Line,” “Run Ronnie Run!,” and “Stark Raving Mad.” In 2003, Foley returned to his native Canada to appear in the comedy “Whitecoats” directed by Dave Thomas.
Dave married his first wife, Tabatha Southey, on December 31, 1991, in Canada. According to Foley, the relationship began right after being introduced when they argued over whether the lead vocalist of the group the Psychedelic Furs was a good singer. They divorced in 1997 after six years of marriage. Together they had one daughter, Alice (born in 1991) and one son, Basil (born in 1995).Foley owed extensive child support to Southey from the divorce. On August 1, 2002, he married Crissy Guerrero. Their daughter, Alina Chiara (born April 16, 2003), currently portrays Ellie on FX’s The League and has appeared as Claire Brady on the soap opera Days of Our Lives from January 3 to March 24, 2008, and also starred in the Jackie Chan movie, The Spy Next Door, released on January 15, 2010. Foley and Guerrero divorced in 2008.
