Donald Sutherland is a Canadian actor, who earned much prominence when he portrayed the role of Pinkley, V.L. in the 1967 film entitled, the Dirty Dozen. He was born on July 17, 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, to Dorothy Isobel and Frederick McLea Sutherland. He was baptized with the real name of Donald McNichol Sutherland and attended the Victoria College and the University of Toronto, where he took double major in engineering and drama. He also became one of the members of the “UC Follies” comedy troupe in Toronto. On the other hand, Sutherland eventually changed his mind to be an engineer; instead, he left Canada to move in England to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
In late 1960s, Sutherland started to have small roles in some British films and in TV as well, making his most notable roles in the horror films together with Christopher Lee, including the film of Castle of the Living Dead in year 1964 and in the 1965 film of Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors. He also appeared in the TV series of The Saint, first in the episode of The Happy Suicide and in the Escape Route. He then starred in the 1967film called, the Dirty Dozen, where he portrayed the role of Pinkley, V.L. He also starred in the film of MASH, where he portrayed the lead role of Capt. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. He also appeared A Sgt. Oddball in the film of Kelly’s Heroes, together with Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas. When he was still n England, Sutherland also appeared in one of the episodes of the 1967 The Avengers entitled, the Superlative Seven.
On the other hand, Sutherland then starred in the film called, Klute, which also starred Jane Fonda. In the film, he portrayed the role of John Klute. In year 1973, he appeared in the horror film of Don’t Look at Me as well as in the war film of The Eagle has Landed. In year 1976, he also appeared in Frederico Fellini’s Casanova. Moreover, some of the most memorable role that he has portrayed in year 1980s and 1990s were in the South apartheld drama called, A Dry White Season. He appeared with Kurt Russell and Robert De Niro in the film of Blackdraft. In year 1995, he was included in the casts of the thriller called, Outbreak. Sutherland also appeared in the 2003 film of The Italian Job and in the TV series of Commander in Chief from year 2005 until 2006. Also, in year 2005, he appeared together with Keira Knightley in the film entitled, Pride & Prejudice, where he portrayed the role of Mr. Bennet. In addition, on May 2011, it was announced that the actor would be portraying the role of President Snow in the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games.
