Gerard Butler has successfully completed a stint in rehab, a rep for the actor confirmed. The 42-year-old actor apparently sought help for his problems at the Betty Ford Center, according to TMZ.com.
Butler’s rep said in a statement that Gerard has completed a successful course of treatment and has returned home in good health. TMZ also earlier reported that the “300” star began treatment three weeks ago at the Betty Ford Center after realizing that he was having trouble managing pain and injuries that first occurred while filming the 2006 Spartan action movie. TMZ.com is reporting that Butler made the decision to enter the Betty Ford clinic three weeks ago when he decided he had become too reliant on pain medication. The actor was allegedly using prescription medication and cocaine, but TMZ noted that he was mainly seeking treatment for his pain management and physical injuries. The website also reported that Butler is expected to be leaving the clinic that day (February 24). In the statement to Access, the rep offered no further details on what the actor was being treated for.
Butler spoke previously about how difficult he found it to adjust when filming wrapped on the physically-grueling action film 300. He said that when he finished filming his whole routine changes and suddenly he does not have to do what he does anymore explaining that it is kind of weird. The actor also said that he feels a little lost adding that he does not have to hold himself the same way physically. According to him, he noticed in watching the video journals that even when he was performing, he was still walking around as the king and talking like him. He said that he does not do that anymore and he can slouch again. Butler said that there was definitely a period of adjustment and physical pain because he stopped training noting that it was the worst thing he could have done.
It had also been reported last year that there were plans to make a sequel to the film; with claims in December that Joel Egerton was in line to replace Butler in the role of King of Sparta. Then, late last year, Butler was involved in the surfing accident which is believed to have exacerbated the pain he was feeling even further. Butler had been shooting “Of Men and Mavericks” in California, a movie based on the life of US surfer Jay Moriarity, playing Ricky ‘Frosty’ Hesson, Moriarity’s mentor. He was getting ready to film action scenes when he was thrown off his surfboard and pummeled by breakers at least 12 feet high, then held underwater for two consecutive waves before being hit on the head by four or five more when he managed to swim to the surface. Speaking about the accident in January, Butler said that it was a pretty close call explaining that the waves just took him in and he could not get up. According to him, it was pretty hairy and it was maybe of the few minutes that reports were not exaggerated.
Butler’s next project, “Movie 43,” is slated to hit theaters in April, followed by “Playing the Field” in December.
