The Italian-American television host and E! News correspondent has revealed that she is battling breast cancer on ‘The Today Show’s Anne Curry on Monday morning (September 17, 2011). Rancic revealed that she has ‘early stage’ cancer and will later undergo surgery followed by six weeks of radiation treatments. The 37-year-old host credited her fertility doctor for pushing her to have a mammogram, which ultimately discovered the cancer. The host was having a trouble to get pregnant and it was on her latest rounds of her In-vitro fertilization when she got the cancer diagnosis. Despite the diagnosis, she has vowed not to give up on having a child and will have her eggs ‘harvested’ before undergoing the cancer treatment process. She said that if you just find it early, you would be okay; she said that she is going to be okay. She added that she wants a baby and what is amazing is that the baby saved her life.
Just two days after announcing that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, Giuliana Rancic underwent surgery to remove the affected areas. The host had a double lumphectomy and according to her 40-year-old husband, she is recovering well. He said it has had a tough year and a half, between IVF and this. There are many steps in the process when you go through this. Because it was on both breasts, the morning started off with a two hour MRI where they had to put a guide wire in so the surgeon knew exactly what area to remove. He also said that Guiliana is a trooper pulling through it and was kind of relieved to get it over with and get the cancer out.
Bill jokingly said that he is adding nurse to his resume and later admitted that it had been an emotional day. He wished he could take some of the pain away. According to him, watching her being wheeled into that operating room was heartbreaking for him. He said he was doing everything he can to support his wife and make sure that she is comfortable and try to make her laugh as often as possible. Even if it was caught accidentally very, very early, he acknowledges that they are viewing this as a gift.
Prior to going through with the revealing TV appearance, Ann Curry noted that Rancic was shaking. According to Guiliana, she was going back and forth whether to do the interview or not. She said that it was just so personal and she was like a nervous wreck. Despite her nerves, Giuliana and Bill say she was determined to go through with it in order to encourage other young women to be vigilant. According to her husband, Guiliana’s goal was to send a message to all the young girls out there. He said he think that their story has a happy ending and that is the good thing. It is very treatable when you catch it early and that is the main message, bill said. You must get after this thing sooner rather than later.
