In an interview with LIVE magazine, Johnny Depp, 48, revealed that he almost died while on a private jet en route to Los Angeles after location scouting for “The Rum Diary.” The actor discussed the near-death experience he has with the “Rum Diary” director Bruce Robinson, 65, as the engines of the plane they are boarding failed and the pair believed they were going down. Just so you know, “The Rum Diary” is currently out in theaters. The Rum Diary chronicles the story of a journalist who travels to Puerto Rico and runs into a series of sometimes-dangerous adventures.
Depp explained that the plane just shut down and the sound of the engines stopped noting there was silence. According to him, he and Bruce were looking at each other and he think he said is this it. He also said that it was like this weird extended moment when you are just floating for a second and you could feel this unpleasant descent. The actor continued saying that nobody said a word except for him and Bruce sitting next to each other saying that is death. He said he guess that is how it goes down then they burst into hysterical laughter at the idea that that was how they were going to die.
When the engines started back up again, Depp said that he and director Bruce Robinson breathed a sigh of relief. According to the actor, suddenly the engines started back up again and they were climbing back up saying that he guess you could say that was a big bonding experience for him and Bruce. He added that for a moment there, they were going down together.
The Rum Diary also stars Amber Heard as Depp’s love interest in the film, she was so impressed with the cast, and director saying there was no reason not to take that project. The plane isn’t the only thing flopping as the pair’s new film The Rum Diaries has failed to live up to expectations. The film costs £35million to make but the film took in just £3million on its opening weekend.
Director Bruce Robinson who wrote Rolan Joffe’s Oscar winning “The Killing Fields” and directed the acclaimed “Withnail and I,” said that they were drinking a Haut-Brion and they were sitting there. The director starred as an actor in Franco Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” playing Benvolio and co-starred with Isabelle Adjani in Francois Truffaut’s classic, “The Story of Adele H.” Bruce said he was not paying for it talking about the expensive wine he and Johnny were drinking when the Gulfstream lost power to both engines. According to him, it was more than one bottle.
The London native said that because of the quality of the wine they were drinking and because they were really identifying with each other, he made a terrible joke that the worst thing that could happen in a plane crash is people getting I luggage racks. According to him, Johnny started laughing at the joke and so did him. He said they were on their knees holding each other roaring with laughter while the plane was crashing then suddenly the engines came back on.
