Julie Walters is an English actress, who is most notable for the portrayal of Susan ‘Rita’ White in the 1983 film entitled, Educating Rita. She was born on February 22, 1950 in Smethwick, Sandwell, to Mary Bridget and Thomas Walters, a postal clerk of Catholic extraction and a builder and decorator. She was baptized with the real name of Julia Mary Walters and has two siblings. She first entered a convent school and then the Holly Lodge Grammar School for Girls, which was located at the Holly Lane in Smethwick. At the young age of 15, Walters had her first job in insurance and when she turned 18, she was trained as a nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and also worked on the Ophthalmic, casuality and coronary care wards.
On the other hand, she made a decision to leave nursing and took English and Drama at the Manchester Polytechnic, which is also known as the Manchester Metropolitan University and continued her career in the performing arts. In addition, Walters also worked for the Everyman Theater Company in Liverpool in year 1970s, together with various renowned artists such as Bill Nighy and Pete Postlethwaite as well as Jonathan Pryce, Willy Russel and Alan Bleasdale. Moreover, Walters first earned much attention as the partner of the comedienne Victoria Wood. Walters and Wood first worked together in the theatre revue called, In at the Death, in year 1978, which was followed by the TV version of Wood’s play called, Talent. The two then appeared on their own TV series called, Wood and Walters, in year 1982. Before she had her stage debut in London in the production called, Educating Rita.
She then worked in regional theater and stand-up comedy as well as in cabaret. On the other hand, her first serious acting role was on TV, appearing in the 1982 drama series called, Boys from the Blackstuff. On the following year, she appeared together with Michael Caine in the film of Educating Rita, where she portrayed the role of Susan ‘Rita’ White. In year 1985, she portrayed the role of Pauline Mole in the British TV series of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13%. In year 1991, she starred together with Liza Minnelli in a play production called, Stepping Out. In year 2001, she earned a Laurence Oliver Award for her portrayal in the 1974 play called, All My Sons. On the following year, she earned a BAFTA award for her portrayal in My Beautiful Son. She then portrayed a recurring role of Molly Weasly in the Harry Potter films. in year 2010, she portrayed the role of Mo Mowlam in the TV film called, Mo. She then voiced the role of Miss Montague in the 2011 comedy film of Gnomeo & Juliet. In addition, Walters is set to appear in the upcoming fantasy film entitled, Brave.
