The Duchess of Cambridge attended her first solo engagement in London on Wednesday taking the place of her father-in-law, Prince Charles with only a day’s notice.  A palace aid said that the Duchess had a little bit of time beforehand to prepare for the engagement yet it all went very well.  Kate Middleton, 29, stepped in for the Prince Charles, 62, at a charity dinner for IN Kind Direct at the Clarence House because the Price of Wales was unexpectedly called to Riyadh to pay his respects to the Saudi Arabian Family following the death of the Crown Prince.  The aid also said that the duchess was so pleased that her first solo engagement was for the Prince of Wales, who has shown her so much support over the years.

A St James Palace spokesman said that the Duchess of Cambridge was delighted to be able to step in for her father-in-law to celebrate the work of In Kind Direct at the dinner.  Clad in a pale blue floor-length chiffon gown with flowing Grecian-style pleated material and wearing her hair in a sophisticated half-up style, the Duchess mingled with 30 guests.  The dress was by Amanda Wakeley and formed part of her 2006 Autumn/Winter collection.  There was silver embellishment underneath the bust area and around the straps.  The dress had double straps that crossed over at the collarbone. The reception was held to thank funders and supporters of the charity, which redistributes surplus goods from manufacturers and retailers to UK charities working at home and abroad.  The Prince of Wales founded the charity in 1996.

Robin Boles, chief executive of In Kind Direct, said that this event was a unique opportunity for In Kind Direct to thank generous supporters who have helped us over the years to deliver so much benefit for UK charities and the millions of people they serve.  In addition, he said that they were delighted that the duchess was able to step in at such short notice after their founder was unexpectedly called away.  The duchess hosted a very special evening with absolute professionalism and charm.

In this event, the duchess’ half-up hairstyle reveal the three-inch scar from just above her left ear to her left temple.  A St James Palace spokesman was quick to downplay the mark, explaining to the Daily Mail that it was related to a childhood operation.  The spokesman refused to give further information so the Mail approached London surgeon John Scurr who cast doubts on how grave the cause of the scar was.  He said that he doubt that it was any serious condition but a result of an arteriovenous malformation – a birthmark – being removed.

In spite of this flaw, that barely affects the beauty of the Duchess; she clearly impressed the guests in attendance during the event.  One guest said that she is more beautiful in person than you can imagine, she literally wowed the room, and she looked amazing.
