Kesha Rose Sebert or simply Kesha/Ke$ha is an American rapper, and singer-songwriter. She was born on March 1, 1987 in Los Angeles, California. She was raised by a single mother named Pebe Sebert who is a singer-songwriter. Kesha and her older brother Lagan was raised solely by her mother alone. Soon after they moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1991, her younger brother Louis was born. Kesha attended Franklin High School and Brentwood High School. Pebe Sebert brought Kesha and her brother to recording studios since she noticed Kesha’s voice a potential. Kesha was taught by her mother to write songs. Her mother was too supportive that when Kesha started to record her songs, she will distribute it to the people she knew. David Gamson, a producer admired by Kesha, agreed to produce her song. When Kesha was convinced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin to pursue her music career, she dropped her school at the age of 17. Samantha Cox, who was a senior director or writer/public relations at Broadcast Music Incorportated, became the bridge for Kesha to be recognized by Dr. Luke and Martin. Her demos received positive reviews in a cover story for Billboard.
In 2005, Kesha signed to Kemosabe Entertainment, Dr. Luke’s record label as well as to his publishing company “Prescription Songs”. She became the background vocals for Paris Hilton’s single “Nothing in this World”. However, because of overflowing success of Kelly Clarkson, where Dr. Luke is a producer of the album, Kesha’s career was slightly became left out. She then signed to David Sonenberg’s company “DAS Communications Inc.” in year 2006. She had worked in co-writing to The Veronica’s single “This Love” under the production of Sonenberg. She also appeared in Katy Perry’s single “I Kissed a Girl” as well as in Britney Spears’ “Lace and Leather “ in 2008. Kesha decided to reunite with Dr. Luke’s record label. She earned her exposure after collaborating with Flo Rida’s number one single “Right Round”. She did two more tracks with the rapper; however, she did not receive any money from her performance. She explained in an interview with “Esquire” after her refusal to appear in a video that she wanted to make her own name in the music industry.
In 2009, she signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records. Her first album was entitled “Animal”, it was released on January 1, 2010. It received positive review from the critics. It debuted in the number one spot after its release in Billboard 200. It sold two million copies worldwide and and became certified platinum in the United States. Her first single in the album was entitled “Tik Tok” which became number one in eleven countries and became the second best-selling single in a week in the United States. On November 19, 2010, the album “Animal” was re-released with an extended play entitled “Cannibal”. It released two singles entitled “We R Who We R” which is a huge success because it reached the number one spot in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia; and the song “Blow” which was released on February 8, 2011.
The dollar sign in the name of Kesha was adopted as a sign that she is struggling hard for her career. Kesha is currently writing her second studio album while she was on tour. She stated that she want her album to be “1970s rock” inspired.
