Leonardo Dicaprio stars in the Oscar Buzzy flick, J. Edgar, as the late FBI boss himself J. Edgar with Armie Hammer taking on the role of Clyde Tolson, Hoover’s right-hand man, who many believe was also his lover.  While there are rumors that Hoover is a homosexual, the two actors shared a kiss in the film portraying the alleged rumor.  However, there was no concrete evidence proving or disproving that Hoover was gay.  Regarding the kiss, Director Clint Eastwood said that he just felt like it was the right thing to do.  Eastwood was put under immense pressure during this project.  First, he had Hollywood after him, saying he was not making the character gay enough.   J. Edgar Hoover was the very first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the movie deals with themes of trust, corruption and morals.

When asked about the idea that Hoover was gay at the premiere of the movie, Leonardo answered that he honestly do not have the answer to that question and he does not think there is anyone still alive who really does.  According to him, if you talk to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there are staunch believers that these two men carried out a very professional relationship and they were sort of inseparable pals.  Leonardo said that these two men went on every vacation together adding that they ate breakfast, lunch and dinner together.  The actor also noted that they went to work together and lived together for 50 years.  They were also together since they never had a family or a girlfriend.  Leonardo then said to put it together in your mind and…

Director Clint Eastwood said if Hoover was gay, there was no way he would have been identified as a gay man, especially in the 1930’s.  According to him, he had an inseparable pal and whether it went from there he do not know adding he could have been.  Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black said the romantic status of the relationship had to be kept a bit vague.  According to him, he think that the audience will come away like they have clear answers but they do leave some things up in the air.  He also said that they allow the audience to watch behavior and observe things that went on and to draw their own conclusions.  Black sort of echoed what Eastwood stated and said in 1919, when Hoover was 24 years old and in his sexual prime, no one said they were gay because they would lose their family, their job and everything.

Josh Lucas who plays Charles Lindbergh in the movie said that he think he was probably deeply closeted adding he does not even know if he knew and that is how troubled he was.  According to him, it is probably the ultimate Achilles’ heel, if you do not know yourself sexually or if you do not know your heart, that has to be a miserable place to exist.  Hammer agreed that there is no answer to the lingering question about Hoover and Tolson saying he took creative license and made that decision for himself.

Terry Thompson opened the cages for his exotic animal park, which encompassed 50 exotic animals including lions and tigers and bears, wolves and monkeys and later committed suicide in Ohio. After letting them run loose in Zanesville, Ohio, the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department shot 49 of them dead out of concern for public safety and Thompson’s widow is now working with police to bury their remains on her property.

But given his activism on behalf of tiger conservation, Leonardo DiCaprio was especially broken up over the slaughter.  The Hollywood A-lister took on to Twitter to mourn the loss of 18 rare Bengal Tigers among the fauna.  He said that the incident was a sad situation and proof that we need better regulation to protect both animals and people now linking to a story that quoted Muskingum Country Sheriff Matt Lutz as saying that all the critters were accounted for following officer’s search (and destroy) mission.  The 36-year-old actor subsequently follow up tweet urging followers to join the World Wildlife Fund’s Conservation Action Network, for whom he lent his good name to help kick off its Save Tigers Now Campaign in May 2010.

DiCaprio’s call for improved regulation over the trade of exotic animals is also in accordance with a statement released by PETA that called the Zanesville massacre.  The group said that a tragic example of just how wrong things can go when people are allowed to keep wild animals.  PETA hopes that this will serve as a wake-up call to Ohio Governor John Kasich, who earlier this year refused to extend an emergency ban on exotic animals in the state that had been put in place by his predecessor.  Police still have no official word on the escaped monkey that had the herpes B virus, though Lutz said his department believed one of the big cats could have eaten it.

Other celebrities have turned on to twitter to express their opinions about the heinous animal massacre.  Many believed that it is a tragedy that could and should have been avoided.  Dancing with the Star’s Carrie Ann Inaba said on her Twitter feed that she is so upset about what happened in Ohio.  She think they could have tried a little harder to save the animals because it was not their fault.  Celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson said the same asking did they really have to kill them?

In spite of the gravity of the situation, some celebrities reacted to the news a little more lightly, while still bringing attention to the issue.  Goerge Takei said with shock on his tweet that Lions and Tigers and Bears escaped from an Ohio preserve.  E’s Joel Mchale noted that Monkey with Herpes still loose in Ohio and later asked how they know, did the dead owner leave a note and repeating monkey with Herpes, Good luck.  Slash voiced the opinion of a lot of people when he tweeted.  He said he got the situation, but there’s no way it was totally necessary to exterminate 49 loose exotic animals in Ohio.

The sheriff’s office has defended their actions, stating that the animals escaped at nightfall and it would have been impossible to track and tranquilize them before dark.  The sheriff said that they were putting public safety above the animals’ welfare.
