Lindsay Lohan is facing a lien for nearly $94,000 that the federal government says she owes in unpaid taxes. Records in Los Angeles County show the lien was filed Thursday seeking payment for the 2009 tax year. Celebrity website TMZ first reported the lien Tuesday, the same day a paparazzo sued the model-actress for being in a car that allegedly struck him in Hollywood in January 2010.
Lohan’s publicist Steve Honig said the starlet’s finances are nobody’s business but her own. As for photographer Grigor Balyan’s lawsuit seeking unspecified damages against Lohan, Honig says he hasn’t seen the case but accused the paparazzi of invading her privacy daily. Grigor Balyan filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in LA Superior Court against Lohan and her driver, Paola Demara, along with Management Company Tri Star Sports and Entertainment. He claims the defendants “so negligently, carelessly, and recklessly operated, maintained, repaired, owned, and controlled their automobile so as to cause an accident which resulted in personal injuries and property damage to Plaintiff.” Lohan is not the first celebrity to be targeted by paparazzi for injuries. Among the stars previously sued are Pierce Brosnan, Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson, Denise Richards, Pamela Anderson, Britney Spears, and Chris Brown.
Throughout the years, California has enacted laws to protect celebrities from paparazzi intrusion. In 1998, the state passed legislation that expanded the liability of paparazzi by creating a cause of action against anybody who committed physical trespass or constructive invasion of privacy. That meant that celebrity photographers couldn’t use intrusive lenses to pierce the veil of private residences. Lindsay Lohan’s representative has vowed the actress will get her accounts in order after she was hit with a tax lien, insisting the star was ‘unaware’ she owes money. The Mean Girls actress, who recently earned $1 million (£1.5 million) to strip for Playboy, owes the U.S. Internal Revenue Service $93,000 (£58,000) from 2009. According to the star’s spokesperson, the actress was not aware of the amount she owes as she recently changed her business team, who kept her affairs in check.
Her personal troubles had also reached their peak, breaking up with girlfriend Samantha Ronson, jetting around the world, and showing up late for court. Sources tell Tmz.com that Lohan thought her accountants were handling her taxes and intends to pay the full amount immediately. If anything, the bill has come at a good time for the actress, considering she pocketed a reported $1 million for her recent Playboy shoot. Despite her troubles, it appears Lindsay is treating 2012 as a fresh start, and has allegedly replaced her business team in an attempt to regain the heights of her early career on screen. According to the Los Angeles Times, she stepped out at hotspot Cheateau Marmont on Wednesday evening for a party hosted by the Weinstein Company to celebrate the current awards season.
Lohan remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case and a misdemeanor grand theft case filed after she took a $2,500 necklace without permission in January. She has been serving morgue duty to comply with her probation.
