Lucy Alexis Liu is an American actress and producer. She was born on December 2, 1968 in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Her parents were Tom Liu who was a civil engineer while her mother Cecilia is a biochemist. Liu has an older brother named John. She attended Joseph Pulitzer Middle School, while she graduated at Stuyvesant High School on 1986 in New York City. Before transferring to University of Michigan, she studied at New York University for one year. She graduated with the degree Bachelor of Science in Asian Languages and Cultures. She also became a member of Chi Omega sorority.
Liu is into photography, collage, and paintings. In fact, she had an art show on September 2006 as well as in Munich in 2008 in which she donated the profits to UNICEF. She became the spokesperson of the “Lee National Denim Day” in 2001 and labeled as the “U.S. Fund for UNICEF Ambassador” in 2005. She became the host for the MTV Exit campaign in 2007 which focused in increasing the awareness of human trafficking in Asia. Liu also became the spokesperson in the support for marriage equality for the gays and lesbians. She was also the first Asian American woman to host the variety show “Saturday Night Live.”
Liu began her acting career in the University of Michigan’s production “Alice in Wonderland”. She auditioned for a supporting role, but was casted as the lead role. She had appeared in various film and television production like “The X Files” and the eight episode of “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” that was entitled “The March to Freedom”. She played the role Ling Woo in the comedy-drama series “Ally McBeal”. She earned an Emmy nomination under the category of “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” as well as in Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “Best Actress in a Comedy Series”.
In November 2000, she played the role of Alex Munday in the action comedy film “Charlie’s Angels”. It was a big hit since it earned $125 million in the United States and $264 million for its worldwide earnings. In the episode of Sex and The City in 2001 entitled “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda”, Liu guest starred as a client of the character Samantha Jones. In June 2003, its sequel opened with the title “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”. She won the “Best Movie Villain” in MTV Award for her performance as O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino’s film “Kill Bill” in 2003. In the year 2006, she became the leading lady and love interest of Josh Hartnett in the film “Lucky Number Slevin”. In December 1, 2006, she portrayed the role Jin Ping in the film “3 Needles”. She was a HIV-positive Chinese woman in the film. She also had cameo roles for the animated show “Futurama” and in “The Simpsons”.
In the year 2007, Liu was listed as one of the “100 Sexiest Movie Stars”. In 2008, she was casted in the drama series entitled “Dirty Sexy Money” playing the role of Nola Lyons. She also dubbed for the voice of Silvermist in the Disney Fairies franchise as well as in “Kung Fu Panda” for the voice of Viper. On March 2, 2010, she played the role Annette in her Broadway debut in the award-winning play “God of Carnage” with Jeff Daniels, Janet McTeer and Dylan Baker.
