Michael Robert Posner was born on February 12, 1988 in Southfield, Michigan to a Jewish Wayne County Prosecutor father and a Catholic mother. He attended and graduated from Groves High School and studied at Duke University, with a major in business and sociology.
This 23-year old dance and hip hop singer has a sharp ear on pop resonances across the musical spectrum. He said it was a result of adolescence without filters, in a vortex of musical influences. In an exclusive interview, Posner said that he was not afraid to acknowledge his musical influences and his sources. As a matter of fact, he has adapted some of his father’s musical interest, which varies from B.B. King to Marvin Gaye to Luther Vandross and sometimes even to Counting Crows.
Posner has pursued his singing career since 2006, where he temporarily dropped out of the university to focus on his music. There were at least three mixtapes dropped by him before he secured a major deal with J Records. It includes A Matter of Time, which he produced from his dorm room in March 2009, and One Foot Out the Door, which was released in October of the same year. After signing the deal though, he decided to return to Duke and toured on the weekends while at the same time recording for his debut album.
On August 10, 2010, his first debut album 31 Minutes to Takeoff was released. His carrier single Cooler Than Me, which was produced by Gigamesh, peaked on the number six spot in the Billboard Hot 100 before finally going on to attain global success. This was immediately followed by a series of live concert, including those at Bonnaroo and the 2010 Warped Tour in the summer of the same year.
On July 20, 2010, his second single was released, which is entitled Please Don’t Go. Posner told the press one time that he is doing something nobody else can do or has done yet. He added that he was blessed to be signed to a label and finished school all at the same time. He explained that it is not stopping there; saying that he still has to recreate what he has done already.
Posner also made several appearances on national television, including Last Call with Carson Daly and America’s Got Talent in 2010, where he performed his smash hit Cooler than Me. He has also collaborated with artists like Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, Big Sean and several other hip hop artists. On February 1, 2011, he released his radio mix of Bow Chicka Wow Wow. This track included a new verse from Lil Wayne. He also performed the same song on his guest appearance on The Ellen Show in April this year.
