Philip Seymour Hoffman is an American actor-director, who Is most notable in the 1992 drama film of Scent of a Woman and Twister as well as in Boogie Nights. He was born on July 23, 1967 in Fairport, New York, to Marilyn L. O’Connor and Stowell Hoffman, a family court judge and a former Xerox executive. Hoffman has two sisters named Jill and Emily and also a brother named Gordy Hoffman.
Hoffman entered the 1984 Theater School at the New York State Summer School of the Arts. After his High School, Hoffman subsequently attended the Circle in the Square Theater’s summer program, pursuing his acting training under the supervision of Alan Langdon. He then received a BFA in drama in year 1989 from the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. At the NYU, Hoffman became one of the founding members of the short-lived theater company of the Bullstoi Ensemble together with his fellow actor, Steven Schub and the director Bennett Miller.
On the other hand, the first role of Hoffman was in a 1991 episode of the TV series of Law & Order. He then ad his break on the following year, when he was featured in the four feature films, like the drama film entitled, Scent of a Woman, where he portrayed the role of George Willis Jr. He then portrayed various supporting roles and has also worked with the well known directors such as Todd Solondz and The Coen Brothers and well as Spike Lee, Cameron Crowe, Davis Mamet and Robert Benton. He also collaborated with Anthony Minghella and Paul Thomas Anderson.
On the other hand, Hoffman appeared in the documentary about the 2000 US elections called, Last party 2000. In year 2002, he starred in the film called, Love Liza, where he portrayed the role of Wilson Joel. On the following year, Hoffman also portrayed the lead role o Dan Mahowny in the film called, Owning Mahowny . He then portrayed supporting roles in the films like Cold Mountain and the romantic comedy film of Along Came Polly. Hoffman also appeared in the 2006 action film of Mission: Impossible III, where he portrayed the role of Owen Davian. The film also starred Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames.
On the following year, Hoffman earned a nomination for the Golden Globe award for the category for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the portrayal of Gust Avrakotos in the film of Charlie Wilson’s War. In year 2008, he also earned nomination for the Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor. Also in year 2008, he was featured in Synecdoche, New York, where he portrayed the role of Caden Cotard as well as in film called, Doubt, where he portrayed the role of Father Brendan Flynn. The film garnered him Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations. He also earned a nomination for the Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal in Doubt.
