The 26-year-old American actress was born on April 17, 1985 in Bedford, New York, to Kathleen McNuity and Timothy Christopher Mara, who is a Vice President of the New York Giants. Mara has three siblings named Daniel, Connor and Kate. She has the combination of Italian and Irish descent, in addition, Rooney Mara graduated in year 2003 from the Fox Lane High School and she traveled to different places like the Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in South America for almost four months as a part of their travelling school. She also entered the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at the New York University, where she also took psychology. She then graduated in year 2010.
Mara was encouraged to act by seeing musical theater plays and also, by watching old films life the 1939 epic film called, Gone with the Wind and the film of Rebecca, which took place in year 1940 as well as the 1938 comedy film of Bringing up Baby, together with her mother. Mara also wanted to be like her older sister, Kate Mara, who is a renowned actress.
Mara debuted in the 2005 horror film of Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, which also includes her sister. She then appeared on the TV series called, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit in year 2006. She also appeared in the drama of Women’s Murder Club in year 2007. Mara subsequently portrayed a drug addict in one of the episodes of the TV series of The Cleaner in year 2008. She was then included in the casts of the film of Dream Boy and in the film of Friends (With Benefits), and was followed by an appearance on the NBC’s series of ER in year 2009.
Rooney Mara portrayed the lead role of the film entitled, Tanner Hall, which also includes the star of Amy Sedaris and Tom Everett Scott. Mara appeared in several projects like in the 2009 comedy film of Youth in Revolt, which also starred Michael Cera. On the other hand, Mara appeared in the independent film of Dare, where she portrayed the role of Courtney. She was also included in the casts of the 2010 remake for the horror film of A Nightmare on Elm Street, where she portrayed one of its lead roles.

In addition, Rooney Mara will team up with Francesca Gregorini for Tanner Hall and in the film of Emanuel and the Truth about Fishes, where she will be portraying the role of a teenager who was employed to babysit a lifelike doll. The film is set to start its production in mid of year 2011.
