The 35-year-old English actress, who is most notable for the portrayal of Poppy in the film of Happy-Go-Lucky, was born on April 27, 1976, to Jacqui and Colin Hawkins, who were both an illustrators of books for children. She was raised in Blackheath in Southeast London and was baptized with the real name of Sally Cecilia Hawkins. She entered the James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich. She then graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in year 1998. In year 2000, Hawkins was included in the ensemble of the theater production of Much Ado About Nothing as well in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
On the following year, she appeared in Misconceptions and in year 2004, she was also featured in country Music. She subsequently included in the casts of David Hare’s adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Allba in year 2005. She then made her most prominent role of Samantha in the 2002 film of Mike Leigh entitled, All or Nothing. She then portrayed the role of Slasher in the 2004 British crime thriller film of Layer Cake, which also starred Daniel Craig and Colm Meaney
Moreover, Hawkins portrayed the role of Zena Blake in the BBC adaptation of the book of Sarah Water entitled, Tipping the Velvet, in year 2002. In year 2005, Hawkins first major TV role came, where she portrayed the role of Susan Trinder in the BAFTA-nominated drama of BBC called, Fingersmith, which also an adaptation of Sarah Waters’ book of the same name, which also includes the star of Imelda Staunton. Hawkins subsequently starred in the BBC adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s Twenty Thousands Streets Under the Sky.
Hawkins then appeared in three episodes of the comedy series of BBC entitled, Little Britain. In year 2006, Hawkins made her returned on stage, performing at the Royal Court Theater in Jez Butterworth’s The Winterling. On the following year, she portrayed the lead role Anne Elliot in the film adaptation of Persuation. The film was followed by her portrayal in the film of Happy-Go-Lucky, where she portrayed the role of Poppy. On the same year, Hawkins also made uncredited appearances in the chat show of Man to Man with Dean Learner.
In year 2009, Hawkins appears in the biographical film of Desert Flower, where she portrayed the role of Marylin. On the same year, she also appeared as Maura in the Irish film of Happy Ever Afters, together with Tom Riley. On the following year, she was included in the cast of the British drama film entitled, Never Let Me Go, where she portrayed the role of Miss Lucy. The film also includes the stars of Carey mulligan and Keira Knightley as well as Andrew Garfield. Also, in year 2010, she played the roe of Vivie in the Broadway production of Mrs. Warren’s Profession. In year 2011, Hawkins was featured in the comedy drama film of Submarine and is also set to appear in the upcoming film adaptation of Jane Eyre.
