Comedian Charlie Sheen, who has been fired from his previous role on TV’s ‘Two and a half men,’ will return to television in Summer 2012 in his new sitcom ‘Anger Management’ to be aired on FX. The new sitcom, which had been previously announced but had yet to find a network, sees Sheen playing an anger management therapist who causes chaos in his patients’ lives by using unconventional methods, the network said in a statement. The new show is the latest in Sheen’s bid to turn over a new leaf in his career after a turbulent year.
He was TV’s highest-paid actor for his role as womanizing bachelor Charlie Harper in the CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” but was fired after a public dispute with the show and network executives at CBS, during which he lashed out at show creator Chuck Lorre. He was replaced by actor Ashton Kutcher. It has been a while since the actor’s name made a noise in the news who was then trying to make a living hocking goodies online with catchy ‘tiger’s blood’ and ‘winning’ related phrases and finally launching a soon-failed-self-aggrandizing comedy concert series. All of that came after a year in which he found himself in legal trouble and in rehab for drug and alcohol use.
More recently the star settled a lawsuit with the ‘Two and a Half Men’ producers and appeared on TV talk shows admitting he was out of control. The actor also took the stage at the Emmys and said to the ‘Men’ cast and crew that from the bottom of his heart he wishes then nothing but the best for the upcoming season.
“Anger Management,” in which Sheen retains a significant ownership stake, is loosely based on the 2003 film of the same name starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. FX has ordered 10 episodes, and production will begin in early 2012. The President and general manager of FX Networks said in a statement that they think that Bruce Helford, Joe Roth and Charlie Sheen have come up with a wonderful, hilarious vehicle for Charlie’s acting talents and a character they are very much looking forward to seeing him play.
Sheen landing the starring role in the sitcom said that he chose the role because it might be a big stretch for him to play a guy with serious anger management issues. Sheen also stated that he is looking forward to the project because it gives him real ownership to the series, a certain amount of creative control. One of Sheen’s cited reason for having issues with “Two and a Half Men” was creative differences with producer Chuck Lorre.
Sheen’s new boss, producer Joe Roth, is excited about the show. According to him, there is no better than Charlie Sheen to tackle ‘Anger Management’ and with Charlie’s incredible talent and comedic gifts, he remains the leading man of TV sitcoms. The series reunites Roth and Sheen, who worked together on movies like ‘Major League,’ ‘Young Guns’ and ‘Three Musketeers.’
