Thomas John Patrick Welling, or simply Tom Welling is an American actor, director, producer, and a model. His portrayal in the television series “Smallville” made him remarkable. He was born on April 26, 1977 in New York. Welling has three siblings. He attended in Okemos High School in Michigan. He was married to Jamie White since the year 2002. The couple resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Welling’s first work was as a construction worker. In 1998, he was discovered in Nantucket and convinced to try modeling. He modeled various brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Calvin Klein. However, Welling does not want to stay in modeling industry because he wants to pursue his acting career. In 2001, Welling got his first major acting role when he portrayed the role of a karate teacher named Rob Meltzer in the series “Judging Amy”. He also appeared in the sitcom “Undeclared” and had a chance to have a small part in the television series “Special Unit 2”.
The television series Smallville is considered to be the biggest break of Welling. He portrayed the title role Clark Kent. The pilot episode aired on October 2001 where it earned 8.4 million viewers. In an interview with “TV Guide”, he stated that he rejected the role twice but accepted it eventually after reading the script. He admitted that he is not a Superman fan and does not read Superman comics as well. People’s magazine recognized Welling as one of the “Breakthrough Stars of 2011”. He also got an award in Teen Choice Award for his portrayal as Clark Kent in the year 2002. Welling also got the chance of meeting the other Superman stars Christopher Reeve and Dean Cain.
Welling also did directorial jobs. He directed the Season 5 episode of Smallville which was entitled “Fragile” in 2006. He continued to direst the series in the Season 6 episode entitled “Hydro”; the 150th episode “Apocalypse”; the Season 8 episode “Injustice”; and the two episodes of the last season of Smallville “Patriot” and “Booster”.
Welling became active in the big screen when he played the role Charlie Baker in the film Cheaper by the Dozen in December 2003. He revealed in one of his interviews that he accepted the role because he wanted to work with his inspiration Steve Martin. He again played the role Charlie Baker in Cheaper by the Dozen Season 2. He also had an appearance in the film “The Fog” as Nick Castle in the year 2005. It was a remake of john Carpenter’s film in 1980. He became the co-executive producer of the ninth season of his TV series Smallville. He became the full executive producer of the series on May 20, 2010. He also became the executive producer of another television series “Hellcats”. It was primarily based in the book “Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders”. It was first premiered on “The CW” in 2010. However, the show was cancelled by the television network on May 17, 2011.
